Landscape Exhibition at Hudson River Museum Highlights RHS Student Work

The Hudson River Museum partners annually withVideo on Demand the Art Department of Roosevelt High School, bringing art world professionals into the classroom to mentor and teach. To culminate another successful year of this partnership, the Museum hosts “Landscaping,” an exhibit featuring the work of Roosevelt High School students. The exhibit runs from May 11 - May 25, 2007 at the Hudson River Museum, Joyce Greene Education Center, 511 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers.

Artists work with students to develop specialized visual arts skills and expose them to various career options in the visual arts. The residencies are planned in collaboration with the art teachers and are designed to supplement and expand the efficacy of school resources, supporting and enhancing the curriculum. They are integrally linked to Museum exhibitions and collections.

This year, students worked with Hudson River Museum Artist-in-Residence John Pardo learning the technical aspects of Adobe PhotoShop. Students created abstracted landscapes in the style of artist Neil Welliver, whose exhibit, Neil Welliver: Chosen Terrain was on view at the Museum in December. Mr. Welliver’s work also served as the inspiration for Artist in Residence Gary Jacketti who introduced the art of the wood block print in which students begin with a simple drawing and through a reduction process sculpt a printing plate and pull multiple prints.

Artist in Residence Sally Apfelbaum instructed students in using the camera to capture outdoor scenery and create personal views of the landscape, which they ultimately combined in a collaborative panorama. This project was inspired by Ms. Apfelbaum’s works in the current exhibition, Contemporary Photography and the Garden – Deceits and Fantasies, Sylvia Sleigh exhibition, Invitation to a Voyage, as well as the square shape of Neil Welliver’s paintings.

Roosevelt Art Teacher Renee Shamosh coordinates this project with the Hudson River Museum.
