Secondary Summer 2007 Transition Program

Students entering grades 6 or 9 in the fall get acquainted with their new school and start the year with ease and comfort when they participate in the Secondary Summer Transition program.

The program takes place August 21-23, 2007 at Roosevelt, Yonkers, Gorton, Lincoln and Saunders High Schools and Commerce, Mark Twain, Emerson and Yonkers Middle Schools. At Riverside High School, the program runs August 28, 29 and 30. Students go to the school they will attend in the fall. Class hours are 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.

This unique program helps incoming students “transition” into middle or high school. Students meet their new school administrators, teachers, guidance counselors and coaches, and learn about the exciting programs at their new school. Teachers explain academic expectations and provide students with support to succeed in school. English Language Arts and math instruction help prepare students for the first few months of school.

Emphasis is placed on social practices and daily school routines, helping students become familiar with their new school building and making it easier to adjust to the new environment. They make new friends and become part of their new school community.

Free transportation will be provided for students: School buses for middle school students and public bus tickets for high school students.

Parents/guardians are invited to attend two of the sessions and have the opportunity to meet administrators and teachers, learn about their roles as middle and high school parents/guardians and get answers to any questions that they have.

To enroll your child in the Secondary Summer Transition program, parents/guardians must complete and mail the registration form that they received in the mail by Thursday, June 21, 2007. Additional forms can be obtained in the office of the school that their child currently attends.
