Senior Buddies for School 21 Youngsters

The Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation and School 21 are partners in a unique intergenerational program that pairs older adults with eager third graders.

At the invitation of Mayor Philip A . Amicone, senior citizens are invited to sign-up for the Senior Buddy Program that pairs knowledgeable seniors with eager and interested 3rd graders from School 21. The 18 week program begins Tuesday, February 6 at Coyne Park Senior Center and runs through June 20th.

"This is a great opportunity for seniors to share their experiences and insight with younger generations,” said Mayor Amicone. “At the same time, the students benefit from listening to unique oral histories, practicing reading skills one-on-one and participating in fun academic and social activities. The strong partnerships formed through intergenerational programs like this are invaluable to seniors and to children. These bonds and memories can last forever.”
