The Power of Editorial Cartoons

A sixteen panel exhibit of editorial cartoons published in the late 1930's and early 1940's that alerted the American public to the Holocaust and the plight of European Jews was the backdrop of a workshop for Gorton High School students.

Rafael Medoff, Ph.D., Director of the David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies, spoke on the history and impact of editorial cartoons during three sessions at the school.

Dr. Medoff's presentation took place just days before the 69th anniversary of Kristallnacht, or Night of Broken Glass, when in just a few hours, thousands of German Jewish homes, business and synagogues were destroyed, and 30,000 Jews were forcibly sent to concentration camps and death.

The David S. Wyman Institute for Holocaust Studies teaches the history and lessons of America’s response to the Holocaust, through scholarly research, public events, publications, and educational programs.
