Lizard Wizard and Boy Rising from a Volcano, poems written by Thomas Papaionnou and Desiray Reyes, 5th grade students in Kathleen Gallagher’s class at  Kahlil Gibran School were selected for publication in the Anthology of Poetry by Young Americans.

Lizard Wizard
by Thomas Papaioannou

Big red head
Sharp bloody teeth
Needy bony spine
Blue waist
Who on earth gave you that
Watermelon head
You blue skinned
Red faced—big-eyed lizard wizard?
Did you come from the underworld?
Do you measure 8 inches tall?
Do you have arms or legs?
Do you talk?
Do you think?
Do you even care to blink?

Boy Rising From a Volcano
by Desiray Reyes

See the boy rising
Chubby and short
Orange skin
Armless
Footless
How long have you been trapped?
Are you happy you are finally rising?
What caused you to be inside the volcano?
Life without water, food, and people
Is now gone forever
Boy rising from a volcano
