$3.8 Million Advances Mathematical Thinkers

The New York State Department of Education awarded $3.8 million to the Yonkers Public Schools for the 2007-2008 school year to implement an action plan for improving mathematics performance across grade levels.

Yonkers submitted an Audit of Written Tested and Taught Curriculum, the accompanying Action Plan and budget as required under No Child Left Behind (NCLB).

The yearlong activities are designed to implement systemic reforms through multiple resources that not only address the written, taught, and assessed mathematics curriculum but also involve the whole child to develop mathematical thinkers.

Key Activities:

Comprehensive and continuous professional development

  • increase teachers’ expectations, content knowledge, and repertoire of mathematics instructional strategies, vertical grade alignment and resources through a partnership with Manhattan College and College of Mount St. Vincent
  • increase the use of visual arts as a medium for learning, reinforcing, and applying mathematics knowledge and skills through a partnership with the Hudson River Museum
  • increase administrators skills and leadership in mathematics curriculum instruction and supervision through a partnership with New York University
  • extensive parent and community involvement
  • initiate a series of Friday and Saturday “Parent Child Math Adventures” facilitated through EPIC
  • advance enriched math instruction
  • school-based mathematics coaches implement team teaching strategies
  • highly recognized New York State mathematics consultants provide professional development for teachers, administrators, and mathematics coaches

Math Academies - extended learning opportunities

  • after school programs implement creative, innovative opportunities for students to explore mathematics connection across multiple subjects
  • guidance counselor assist and address multiple issues that influence students’ mathematics success
