Parents from seven district elementary schools will find out how items they purchase on a regular basis can help fund a college savings account at a unique adult education program on Saturday, March 8th. Information about New York’s 529 college savings plan is just one of fifteen workshops being offered in the first of a series of free one-day Parent University programs to be held through 2009. The goal is to provide more knowledge about children’s education and the community

The initial opportunity is for parents whose youngsters attend school in the southern part of Yonkers. “In a city that covers more than twenty square miles, it makes so much sense to host multiple, smaller and more personal Parent Universities throughout the city,” says Stephen Hill, the Yonkers Public Schools Assistant Director for School and Community Affairs.

First Workshop for Parents of Students Attending Seven Schools
The first in the local Parent University series is set for Saturday, March 8, 2008 from 9:00am-2:00pm, and is for parents of youngsters attending:

  • School 13
  • School 17
  • School 23
  • Scholastic Academy
  • Cedar Place
  • Hostos
  • PEARLS

Children are welcome! Childcare is provided onsite.

The program begins with a continental breakfast and some old fashioned mingling, then continues with workshops on topics of interest to all parents, everywhere, such as college planning, family health and nutrition, homework help and more. For a complete list of workshops, please link here.

Parent University is a community collaboration planned in association with parents and community partners. Pre-registration is preferred and transportation is provided.
