Basketball Season Note:

Five Varsity Basketball Teams were represented in sectional games: Saunders High School Girls and Gorton, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Yonkers Boys. A tremendous and memorable season for these young athletes and their coaches.

(02-27-08) Yonkers High School 11th grader Jared Newman moved up to finish 20th in the Boys Varsity Giant Slalom in the NY State Public High School Skiing Championship at Lake Placid. He tore through the tricky course at White Face Mountain in 2:03.03.

Sportsmanship Award to Yonkers High School Boys Basketball Team

Congratulations to the Yonkers High School Varsity Basketball Team for a magical and valiant season. In regular play, they led the league in blocks, rebounds, steals and assists. These determined athletes, their inspirational coach, Nick Parashis, and the school's Athletic Director, Joan McKee, have been honored with the Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award for their hard work, fair play, cohesiveness, team spirit and sportsmanship. The team will be honored at the Class A championship game March 2, 2008 at the Westchester County Center.

Yonkers Skier Qualifies for State Championship

Jared Newman, an 11th grader at Yonkers High School has qualified for the NY State Public High School Skiing Championship to be held February 25 through February 28 at Lake Placid, NY.

Jared qualified to move on to States with his bronze finish in the Section 1 skiing championships at Catamount Ski Area in Hillsdale February 14th.

Yonkers Public Schools fields over 180 athletic teams, culminating in 63 Varsity teams, which compete in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. We are very proud that our athletes exemplify the utmost in sportsmanship and fair play.

During the 2006-2007 school year, Yonkers Public Schools earned 6 League Titles and 4 New York State Team Scholar Athlete Awards. In addition, 153 athletes earned All League Status, 38 earned All Section status, 1 earned Section 1 Bowler Of The Year, 2 Earned All State status, one earned a State Championship.
