YPS Honored With Little Doctors Program Award
(June 17, 2009) Yonkers Public Schools was honored with the 2008-2009 Little Doctors Program Award by the New York Blood Center for its outstanding record of educating the community about the importance of giving blood. Schools throughout the District participated in the Little Doctors program and hosted student led blood drives, collecting 751 pints of life saving blood.
The Little Doctors program integrates curriculum and community service, helping elementary and middle school students learn about the circulatory system, and the critical role blood donations play in saving lives. The youngsters also organize the blood drive, reaching out to the community to encourage donations, and assisting the medical professionals in the collection of blood.
This educational program was coordinated in the elementary and middle schools by Mrs. Judy Mayer, Assistant Director of Science.
