Currently enrolled 5th graders at 15 PreK-Grade 5 schools will remain at their schools as 6th graders under a plan announced by the Superintendent at the November Board of Education meeting. Middle schools will house 7th and 8th graders only.
Superintendent Pierorazio notes "the data is overwhelming to support this move. Sixth graders in Yonkers PreK-Grade 8 schools scored significantly higher on New York State English Language Arts and Math tests over the past three years than sixth graders in the middle schools."
Parents of currently enrolled 5th graders will receive a letter from the Superintendent advising that their child will remain at his or her current school. They will not participate in the School Choice process.
School Choice Process
School Choice applications will be mailed the week of January 4, 2010 to all currently enrolled 8th graders and 6th graders at Montessori elementary schools. Completed applications must be submitted between Wed 1/6/10 - Sat 1/23/10.
In September 2010, Yonkers Public Schools will have 17 PreK-Grade 6 schools, 12 PreK-Grade 8 schools, 2 Grades 7-8 middle schools, 1 Grades 7-12 College Preparatory Academy, and 6 comprehensive high schools.
