Superintendent Pierorazio Announces That High School Graduation Rates Rise, Marking Three Years Of Gains
Yonkers’ four-year high school graduation rate rose to a new high of 62.2 percent in 2008, outperforming New York’s Big 5 cities schools (New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Yonkers) according to the State Education Department, which released the data on June 22. The graduation rate rose 9.8 percent between 2005 and 2008, a continuous rise since Superintendent Pierorazio took over the school district. >> More
YPS Collects Blood by the Gallon
Yonkers Public Schools was honored with the 2008-2009 Little Doctors Program Award by the New York Blood Center for its outstanding record of educating the community about the importance of giving blood. Grapevine Celebrates Inaugural Year
Thanks to a three-way partnership between the Yonkers Public Schools, Yonkers Partners in Education and Rising Media Group, the Yonkers Student Grapevine celebrated a year of publishing success at a luncheon yesterday. Student reporters from each of the District's high schools worked with teachers and YonkersRising staff - under deadline pressure - to write, edit, and produce the monthly newspaper. The paper became an immediate hit and the monthly must read for anyone who wants to be in the know.

Ed Frazier Named Outstanding Career and Technical Education
Teacher of the Year Donald Sweitz Honored for Going Above & Beyond Ed Frazier, the Saunders High School teacher who has passed on his technical knowledge of ventilation systems to generations of Yonkers students was honored today by the Yonkers Career & Technical Education Advisory Council at its annual recognition breakfast. Another Saunders teacher, Donald Sweitz, was honored for going Above and Beyond. As the lead teacher in the Architecture Technology program, Mr. Sweitz encouraged students to explore possibilities in their designs and apply their knowledge through internships. >> More

Math Results Build on Success
21.5% Increase Over Two Years Yonkers elementary and middle school students continue to make strong and steady progress on New York State mathematics assessments, according to information released by New York State Education Commissioner Richard Mills. Board of Education Adopts Budget A Dynamic Blueprint for Future Financial Stability
With its "wholehearted support," the Yonkers Board of Education adopted the Superintendent’s recommended budget of $487.1 million for 2009-2010 that calls for a budget-to-budget increase of 0.81%, the lowest in recent memory. In his presentation to the Board on Wednesday evening, Superintendent Bernard P. Pierorazio said that “the money we spend on educating the children of Yonkers is essentially the foundation of our shared values and aspirations. It is the responsibility of this Superintendent and the Board of Education to build this foundation with wisdom and sensitivity, and to safeguard the resources the community provides.”

Saunders & Riverside Robotics Teams Show Yonkers Pride at International Competition
Effective partnerships between school, community and industry, competitive spirit and gracious professionalism earned the Saunders Droid Factory and the Riverside Envirobotics teams the opportunity to compete in the US FIRST International Robotics Competition this weekend at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. The Riverside Envirobotics team, competing in its rookie year, completed the season with a record of 8-6-0. The Saunders Droid Factory completed the season with a record 24-10-0. Yonkers Pride - Robotic Competition Results Saunders Wins Chairman's Award & Riverside Honored as Rookie All Stars We are pleased to report from the Javits Center in NYC that the Saunders Droid Factory robotics team was honored with the Regional Chairman's Award following a weekend of gripping competition at the NYC Regional US FIRST Robotics Championship. This award honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate. Riverside High School was honored with the Rookie All Star Award which celebrates the rookie team exemplifying a young but strong partnership effort. What a great moment for the students, their coaches and mentors, parents and the generous supporters who were with them every step of the way.
Saunders Tops Battle of the Bots A mysterious box of parts, with no instructions whatsoever, was transformed into a rock ‘em sock ‘em robot that battled its way across a 54’ x 27’ playing field to earn its human handlers a victory in the US FIRST Robotics Regional Competition -- and a chance at the international title. The Saunders Droid Factory Team 2344, the Rookie All-Stars in last year’s competition, demonstrated a "remarkable capacity for creativity, superior strategy and technical excellence."
Gorton Wins Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award
The Westchester County Basketball Officials Association has honored the Gorton High School Boys Varsity Basketball team and their coach with the coveted Dennis T. Hurlie Sportsmanship Award. The team will be acknowledged for hard work, fair play, cohesiveness, team spirit and sportsmanship during halftime at Saturday's Section 1 AA Finals taking place at the Westchester County Center. This is the second year in a row that a Yonkers team has earned this award.

Gorton Wins Moot Court Competition Law Magnet students took home top honors at the Silverman Moot Court Competition sponsored by the Westchester County Human Rights Commission, out-arguing 16 of Westchester’s most elite competitors. Students and teacher John Dolgetta will be honored at the Commission’s Annual Human Rights Day Breakfast December 10th.
College is in Their Future College is a must for the three aspiring superintendents who joined our current Superintendent of Schools on the stage of Cedar Place School Tuesday. Accompanied by an upper-classman, these members of the Class of 2022 described their career and educational goals as the District celebrated the beginning of their journey from PreKindergarten to college. Financial Literacy Begins Here
Guiding School 13 students through a lesson in how a community spends its money were volunteers from MasterCard. Exchanging a day in the office for a day in the classroom, the professionals used their financial expertise to help Junior Achievement teach students about the economics of their neighborhoods.
They Took the Call and Made the Sacrifice Yonkers Middle school students led the District in honoring the service and sacrifice of the nation's veterans in a moving tribute to five men from the school community who wore the country's uniform. The Roosevelt High School Junior ROTC Color Guard joined the students to honor Steven Alvarez, William Flower , Gary Cohn, Jerrold Goldman and Francis Kelly.
College Center Opens At Roosevelt HS A central hub of opportunity providing valuable resources to students and that helps them navigate the complex road to college opened Friday at Roosevelt High School. A Day in the Life of the Hudson River A 315 mile long network of students stretching from lower Manhattan to the Adirondacks investigated aquatic life, water chemistry, tides and weather during a "Day in the Life of the Hudson River.” Saunders High School Environmental Technology students collected scientific information to create snapshots of the river, and then shared and compared their data with others so they can better understand how their piece of the river fits into the larger Hudson estuary ecosystem.

Lincoln High School Remembers
Yamel Merino on September 11
President Bush said, "for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th". For the Lincoln High School community, there will be no forgetting Yamel Merino. A former student at the school, this gentle and compassionate young woman gave her life helping others to safety on September 11, 2001. She was 24 years old. Lincoln High School commemorated the events of September 11 - the lives lost, the lives saved, the lives changed. The 25,000 students and 4,000 staff members of the Yonkers Public Schools paused for a united moment of reflection at 9:00 this morning.

Special Education Audit: Organizational, Program and Service Delivery Review
An independent audit commissioned by the Yonkers Public Schools to help improve outcomes for students with disabilities was presented yesterday to the Instructional Affairs Committee of the Yonkers Board of Education and to District administrators. Fall Sports Physicals Continue

Sign of the Times New signs designating 201 Palisade Avenue as Palisades Preparatory School were installed last week, bringing its inaugural class of 6th and 9th graders another day closer to the grand opening of their school. Principal Michael J. Angresano and faculty members have been preparing for the September 4th opening of this College Board School, established in collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. All Yonkers Public Schools will welcome students to the 2008-2009 school year on Thursday, September 4th.
Welcome Cao Pin, Guest Teacher From Beijing
With the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in Beijing as a backdrop, Yonkers Public Schools welcomes Cao Pin, a visiting guest teacher who will provide instruction in Chinese language and culture at Yonkers International Baccalaureate Middle/High School. Cao Pin, whose native language is Mandarin, arrived in Yonkers last week following a journey of more than 7,000 miles. >> More

Passport to Yonkers Intergenerational Art Exhibit Now at Will Library
After a successful run at the Riverfront Library, “Passport to Yonkers,” an intergenerational art exhibit featuring the work of Yonkers Public Schools students and Yonkers senior citizens moves to the Grinton I. Will Branch of the Yonkers Public Library for the month of July 2008. Over 90 paintings, drawings and reliefs will be on display in the Fine Arts and Childrens’ Rooms at the Grinton I. Will Library, located at 1500 Central Park Avenue in Yonkers.
The Passport to Yonkers Art Exhibit is sponsored by the Yonkers Public Schools, Jewish Council of Yonkers, Yonkers Public Library, City of Yonkers Mayor’s Office, and City of Yonkers Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The exhibit celebrates the diversity of the many different groups and individuals who make up the City of Yonkers.
