Destination China: Superintendent & Magnet Schools Director Among 800 Educators to Tour China

$6.4 Million Needed for Yonkers Schools
With the release of the proposed 2007-2008 City of Yonkers Budget, the Yonkers Board of Education must aggressively campaign New York State to close the $6.4 million gap for the next school year.  Superintendent of Schools Bernard P. Pierorazio, returned to Albany last week to focus attention on fiscal and educational issues facing the District.  He met with state legislators and officials in a daylong campaign on behalf of the students of Yonkers.

$125,000 in College Scholarships Presented to YPS Seniors During Business Week
Mayor Phil Amicone, the Yonkers Industrial Development Agency, Classic Residence by Hyatt and Parkledge Apartments presented 30 Yonkers Public Schools seniors with $125,000 in college scholarships. The awards help underscore the city’s commitment to the success of the Yonkers Public Schools. Superintendent of Schools Bernard P. Pierorazio celebrated the achievements of these wonderful students, encouraging other businesses to join in with scholarship opportunities. Congratulations to the students, and a hearty thank you to our community and business partners for their generous support.

Students Perform Brilliantly at NYS SkillsUSA Competition
This fabulous team of outstanding young people from Saunders High School took first place in the NYS SkillsUSA Competition for Opening and Closing Ceremony, which is one event where the whole is definitely equal to the sum of its parts. And in another example of cohesive teamwork, the students took third place for their Chapter Display, an excellent promotional exhibit designed and constructed by the Saunders students articulating the SkillsUSA theme.

Dr. Clarice Morris has taken her place amongst a distinguished roster of educators as the Yonkers Public Schools Teacher of the Year. Honored at a festive dinner last evening, Dr. Morris was recognized as an inspirational and energizing teacher; the kind of teacher students remember for a lifetime.

Veteran Educator is the Administrator of the Year

Accolades for Mrs. Jerilynne Fierstein at the Board of Education Stated Meeting as the Yonkers Public Schools Director of Public Information, Gifted and The Arts was honored by the Rotary Club of East Yonkers with its Leadership in Education Award for her distinguished commitment to quality education and community service. Mrs. Fierstein has devoted her professional life to those twin ideals, and has excelled in every facet of her career.

New York State Education Department Removes Roosevelt High School from Schools under Registration Review
New York State Education Commissioner Richard Mills announced today that the sustained improvement rate of student achievement at Roosevelt High School warrants its removal from the list of Schools Under Registration Review (SURR).

Yonkers High School Students Weave Holiday Hope Knitting for the Needy
Knitting Holiday HopeJust like the sweaters Grandma knits to keep her loved ones warm, large blankets crocheted by Yonkers High School students will help “Warm Up America.” Just in time for the holidays, the school’s new knitting club partners with the national organization Warm Up America to donate handmade blankets to homeless shelters, orphanages and families displaced by natural disasters. Because each knitter contributes one square per blanket, the students weave a bit of themselves into every afghan and extend their holiday wishes to each recipient.

Under the guidance of faculty advisor Lumi Selimaj, the knitting club meets after school and during lunch. The club welcomes novices to experts.

First Ever "Sauce-Off" Provides the Gravy for Saunders High School Annual Delizie Invernali
Reserve now for an evening of hearty eating and family fun as Saunders High School is transformed into a Delizie Invernali (winter delight) by students in the award winning Culinary Arts program and Skills USA chapter Friday, December 8 from 6:00-9:00pm. And, in the first ever "sauce-off", staff compete for bragging rights to the best --- you guessed it --- sauce. We can't wait! More
