Workforce Preparation
In Yonkers, Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs provide the curriculum and content for many of the programs that attract students from all sections of the city. The ultimate goal is to prepare students to meet the State standards for graduation, while helping them make informed choices about their future, and to give them the skills necessary to be productive members in society.
Beginning at the elementary level, Career and Technical Education provides students with an understanding of the concept of work and familiarizes them with a wide variety of career options.
On the middle school level, students study the relationships between acquired skills and occupational fields. They are provided with exploratory and prevocational experiences that permit them to test their interests and abilities.
On the secondary level, Career and Technical Education provides in-depth skills training in Business, Health and Public Services, Career Education, Home and Careers, Computers, Technology and the Trades.
On the adult level, Occupational Education offers residents of the City of Yonkers an opportunity to learn entry level skills, as well as receive advanced training in a variety of career and technical areas.
This is supplemented by a career planning process that will begin in prekindergarten and continue through high school. Each year students are provided with opportunities to build their personal Career Portfolio/ Career Plan. With this Career Plan process in place, all students will have their career development history well documented by graduation.
The Career and Technical Education Department maintains a strong relationship with local business and industry through the Yonkers Advisory Council for CTE. These partnerships provide school personnel with current information regarding career development, procedures, job entry skills, and survival techniques, as well as help to maintain industry standards for all students.
