Operation Recognition

 

Operation Recognition awards high school diplomas to veterans who sacrificed their education to serve our country.

Veterans of World War II, The Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War who left school to serve in the military before graduation are eligible for this recognition.

Candidates must submit evidence of service during:

  • World War II
    December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946
  • The Korean Conflict
    June 27, 1950 - January 31, 1955
  • The Vietnam War (Southeast Asian Hostilities)
    May 1, 1961 - April 30, 1975

What Documentation is Needed?
Documentation may be a DD-214, discharge papers or a letter from a recognized veterans agency affirming service.

Is High School Attendance in Yonkers or New York State a Requirement?
Candidates do not need to show evidence of attendance at a school in New York State.  They need only affirm in writing that they do not possess a high school diploma.

Can a Veteran Who Earned a GED After Military Service Participate?
Candidates possessing a High School Equivalency (or GED) diploma are eligible for the program.

Can a Deceased Veteran Receive Recognition?
Diplomas may be awarded posthumously. Next of kin may apply.

Veterans needing proof of military service can contact the City of Yonkers Department of Veteran’s Services or any New York State Division of Veterans' Affairs office for assistance in obtaining documentation of active duty.
