One of the Top 50 in the Nation

Yonkers High SchoolYonkers High School is once again a Gold Medal school according to the just released US News & World Report 2010 list of America's 100 best high schools. YHS also maintains its first place position among Westchester County’s High Schools. Saunders Trades and Technical High School maintained its bronze status for the third consecutive year is once again a Gold Medal school according to the just released 2010 US News & World Report rankings of America's 100 best high schools. Ranked forty-first in the country, YHS also maintains its first place position among Westchester County’s high schools, and is distinguished as the nation's fifth ranked International Baccalaureate high school. In addition, Saunders Trades and Technical High School maintained its bronze status for the third consecutive year, placing among the top 1,000.

Casimir Pulaski, American Citizen
Two hundred thirty years after giving his life in service to General George Washington, Polish born General Casimir Pulaski was made an honorary American citizen by an act of the 111th Congress of the United States. President Obama signed the legislation Friday. The Casimir Pulaski School, located at Kings Cross Way, is named in the General's honor.

A Day of Service With Many Thanks To OmnicomCares
Dozens of volunteers from OmnicomCares pitched in with Yonkers Public Schools staff and community members for a day of service at the Eugenio María de Hostos MicroSociety School Saturday, November 7. The volunteers cleaned and painted classrooms and common spaces in the school, and built a computer center which will be used to publish a school newspaper.

With red, white and blue enlivening the school's gymnasium, new students and staff at the Eugenio María de Hostos Microsociety were sworn in as citizens and the school's newly elected officers took the oath of office.

Columbus Sailed the Ocean Blue
Christopher Columbus must have stepped into a time machine on his way to the new world, landing at School 23 with tales of his remarkable voyage. The children had lots of questions. Admiral Columbus, aka Angelo Campanile, actually sailed in to present certificates of recognition to the students for their participation in the City’s annual Columbus Day Parade. Junior Achievement & MasterCard Inspire Students
Volunteersfrom Mastercard International traded in a day at the office for a day in the classroom this week. Partnering with Junior Achievement of the Hudson Valley, the professionals visited schools 5 and 13 to help students learn some business and economics basics. >> Watch

NY Jets Names Roosevelt's Mike Meade Coach of the Week
Coach Coach Mead will receive $1,000 from the New York Jets to benefit Roosevelt's football program. The award is "given to a coach in the tristate area who serves the best interests of the game through the teaching of sound football fundamentals, the motivation of young players to achieve, and the promotion of youth football by way of dedication to their community, their school and their student-athletes." That sounds like our coach! Meade will receive $1,000 from the New York Jets to benefit Roosevelt's football program. College Center Opens At Lincoln High School
The District's second full service College Center officially opened at Lincoln High School, thanks to the strong partnership with Yonkers Partners in Education and with funding from Entergy. Superintendent of Schools Bernard P. Pierorazio, Lincoln Principal Edwin Quezada, Board of Education President Bernadette Dunne and Entergy's Vice President for Operations Joseph DeRoy cut the ribbon that opened a world of opportunity for our students.
Montessori Academy Students Put Their Stake In the Ground for World Peace
Montessori Academy students joined with millions all over the globe to mark the United Nations International Day of Peace by creating pinwheels and planting them on the sweeping lawn of their school. The gesture was more than symbolic. Maria Montessori believed that "establishing everlasting peace is the work of education." Watch!
Summer Youth Program Gives YPS Students A Stimulating School to Work Experience

Lance Cpl. John J. Malone

United States Marine Lance Cpl. John J. Malone, a graduate of Charles E. Gorton High School, gave his life for our country Thursday, September 24, 2009 while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan. He was 24 years old. John, we will never forget you, or your sacrifice.

The New York State School Public Relations Association has honored the Yonkers Public Schools digital and traditional communications program with five Awards of Excellence and three Awards of Merit. The recognition comes from a national panel of judges in one of the country’s largest and most ambitious communications competitions.

Saunders Trades and Technical High School Selected as Model High School
Saunders was selected as one of three model high schools in the nation, along with Newport High School in Bellevue, Washington and Withrow University High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, to participate in a research study that will seek in-depth understanding of the critical factors that produced the school’s excellent results. Saunders was recognized as a top high school from a group of 75 high-performing high schools for this research study which is funded in part by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in coordination with the Council of Chief State School Officers and the International Center for Leadership in Education.

African-American Heritage Parade Honors Three District Employees
Cecilia Meyers, a music teacher at Lincoln High School; Jacqueline Beville, a social worker at Riverside High School; and Keith Fields, an assistant principal of the CARE high school program, were honored by the African-American Heritage Parade Committe during its annual festival in August.

Mrs. Dunne Appointed Big Five Chair
Mrs. Bernadette Dunne, the president and senior member of the Yonkers Board of Education, was appointed to serve as the Chair of the Conference of Big 5 School Districts for the 2009-2010 school year.  The organization represents New York’s five largest city school districts, which educate more than 40% of the State’s public school students.

The fiveConnect on the YPS Facebook Alumni Page traditional commencement ceremonies marking the graduation of the senior class from Gorton, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Saunders and Yonkers high schools were each joyful and stirring. The 1,400 members of the Class of 2009 also celebrated their stunning $30,619,536.00 in scholarships. There is no question that the students in the Yonkers Class of 2009 are the young adults colleges and universities want in the Class of 2013.
