The Theme/Philosophy
Smaller Learning Communities: Brown University Research Site

Ninth Grade Academy

  • Teams of 120 students taught by core area teachers using interdisciplinary instruction and flexible scheduling
  • Comfortable adjustment for high school students
  • Extra academic support and study skills
  • Integration of rich learning experiences
  • Academic Improvement Program (AIP) to help students catch up on academic credits

Communications Academy

  • Commercial Illustration encompasses lettering, design, layout and color selection
  • Fine Arts include Studio in Art, Advanced Placement Studio in Art, Drawing, Art Appreciation, Painting, Advertising and Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, Beginning and Advanced Fine Arts, and Portfolio Preparation for art careers and entrance into art schools
  • Print Journalism/Desktop Publishing introduces the fundamentals of print journalism and basic techniques in computer graphics
  • Television Production/Broadcast Journalism trains students in telecommunications and offers an internship program at Yonkers Public Schools Educational Television station, WDMC-TV cable television Channel 75

Global Science Academy - Earth, Sea and Space

  • Inquiry-based approach to the study of aerospace technology, astronomy, physics, engineering physics, marine biology, living environment, chemical sciences, ecology, earth science, aeronautical engineering, health issues, and archeology
  • Advanced mathematics courses in intermediate and college algebra, technical algebra, calculus, and trigonometry

United States Air Force JROTC

  • Leadership Studies include Air Force customs and courtesies, cadet corps activities, study habits, time management, communication skills, leadership and management studies, with the primary mission for cadets to become better citizens now and in the future
  • Cadets are required to wear Air Force uniforms at least once a week, to any military function, and on all trips outside the school

Public Service Academy

  • Entry level training for local, state, federal, and private sector law enforcement agencies
  • Practical training with technical devices and scientific procedures used in police investigation and, where possible, in the rigorously physical Cooper Standards for police personnel
