October Employee of the Month
Maurice Mercado

 

Maurice Mercado exemplifies a successful product of Yonkers Public Schools.  A life long resident, he attended School 8 elementary, Museum Middle School and graduated from Gorton High School in 1998.  He received an Associates degree in Media Arts from Westchester Community College and a Bachelor’s degree from Lehman College in Multilingual Journalism in 2003.  Maurice has been happily married to Ruth for over 5 ½ years.  In July 2003, he began his career in the Public Information department under the aegis of now retired administrator Jerilynne Fierstein, and present administrator Maura Lamoreaux.

Ms. Fierstein states, “Throughout his tenure he interacts in the most professional manner and it is impressive how his skills have grown.  He began as a graphic artist, willingly took on the responsibility as the district’s photographer and most recently embracing his additional role as anchor person for WDMC-TV news program.  Mr. Mercado has expanded the outreach to Yonkers Spanish community, broadcasting En Espanol”. 

Principal Pat Langan states, “As a former graduate of DiChiaro, Maurice is a dedicated employee who reflects the best of Yonkers Public Schools.  He is a highly motivated self starter who takes on new tasks and challenges and follows through.  Maurice treats parents, students and staff respectfully.  He is an asset to every program he is involved in.  In the years that I have known him, Maurice demonstrated exemplary professionalism.” 

Principal Elda Perez-Mejia states, “Mauricio has always been willing and able to work with the students and staff to ensure the best product and representation of the school is made.  He has been phenomenal in his delivery of the Yonkers update in Spanish and is responsible for reaching a population in Yonkers that had previously been uninformed of current happenings.  Mauricio has always been courteous and is a great asset to our district.”  Dr. Joan O’Gorman has renamed him “Maurice the magnificent; this is a multi-talented individual whose creativity enhances many projects and events in our school district.  He is very cooperative and lends his skills to any request we make of him.  No one can represent Employee of the Month better than Maurice Mercado.  In person or on television, he is a great representative for the Yonkers Public Schools”
