Sports at Roosevelt High School
Roosevelt High School’s sports program has a long history of success in the city of Yonkers. The tradition can be traced back to 1990’s and early 2000’s, with the school producing New York State Champions in Tennis (95’,96’, 97’), Bowling (00’, 02’) and Football (96’). Led by legendary coach and Yonkers Sports Hall of Fame member, Tony DeMatteo, the 1996 Roosevelt Indians remain the only football team to win a NY state title within the city.
Recently, a rebirth of Roosevelt’s identity and facilities has taken place. Now known as the Sharks, the school has added new locker rooms, a new weight room, and a brand new beautiful turf field - named Tony DeMatteo Field - in honor of the Hall of Fame Coach. New merged programs have also emerged with the birth of The Yonkers Pride Lacrosse team and The Yonkers Force football program.
Recently, Roosevelt has excelled in both soccer and basketball, reaching the playoffs and winning city titles in the last two years.
