Health Education

  • Please note that I will be available to assist any student with all work assigned during the time when schools are closed. Hours will be from 12:00pm through 3:30pm daily during our regular scheduled days of class. While I will be fully avaiable each day during these hours, I will also be available and responding to any/all questions throughout the day. 

    Please regulary check your Microsoft Teams Account (I have set up an app - Microsoft Office 365 in the Distance Learning - E Learning section on your Clever account to help you with this process). Please also check this webpage and the Distance Learning - E Learning tab on a regular basis. 

    While I understand there will be many challenges to this new format, I will be regularly looking for the best ways to continue learning during this time. You are encouraged to ask for help if you face any challenges with this process.

Schedule: Monday/Tuesday at Eugenio Maria de Hostos MicroSociety School  - Wednesday/Thursday at Cesar E. Chavez School- Friday at Hostos (Week A) Cesar E. Chavez(Week B)

Overview:

The 7th and 8th health curriculum is designed to be standards-based in a learner-centered environment. Students will be regularly engaged in instruction that will provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to be safe and healthy while guiding each student towards a health enhancing lifestyle.

Goal:

Health Literacy -  is the degree to which individuals have the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.

Content:

In accordance with the National and New York State Health Education Standards as well as The Guidance Document for Achieving the New York State Standards in Health Education, the following content areas will be covered:

  • Abstinence, Puberty & Personal Health
  • Emotional & Mental Health
  • HIV, STD & Pregnancy Prevention
  • Nutrition & Physical Activity
  • Tobacco, Alcohol & Other Drug Prevention
  • Violence & Injury Prevention

*A consent form will be handed out and must be signed prior to all areas related Sexual Health/Human Sexuality.

 

Within each content area various skills will be developed including:

  • Decision Making
  • Planning and Goal Setting
  • Communication
  • Advocacy
