  • To all of my amazing 9th and 11th graders, thank you for accepting me in October with open arms and big hearts as your permanent English teacher. I've learned so much from you this year. We have laughed, cried, and soared (YEAH WE KICKED NYS REGENTS BUTT), together, and while I wish the year did not have to end this way, I am just at peace to know that my students are safe and continue to thrive, to continue to be curious, and to continue to be strong, SAUNDERS STRONG. Thank you for making my first year one I will never ever forget, from my ninth graders being vulnerable and creative enough to write their own personal vignettes, to my eleventh graders who stood by me through Gatsby, even when I knew they just wanted to watch the movie and be done with it. To all the parents who reached out and accepted me, and who advocated for their children, and helped me better understand their needs, thank you. To the admin and the incredible English department, I love you all so much. Thank you.

With all the love and hope in your bright futures,

    Ms. P

  • My students. These last few months have been FULL of emotions. I would love for you to email me or send me a remind of a happy or hopeful or positive memory you have experienced over the past few months.

I'll leave you with this quote.

“Hoping for the best, prepared for the worst, and unsurprised by anything in between.”

Meditation:

Some of you know I wrote my college essay from a meditation experience I had in high school. Well, my teacher and mentor, Mr. Meyer, posted a meditation for all to listen to and relax in this time of great stress and uncertainty. I hope this helps you connect to each and every moment.
Best,

Ms.Petnuch

Hours M-F 11-3 I will usually respond ASAP, but will also respond to any emails or reminds after hours as well.

In the event we will not be able to meet, your at home instructions are as follows:

Write a two page reflection on Romeo and Juliet with references to the text. Two pages double spaced times new roman font.

In addition, please choose one group member to email me a copy of each of your Romeo and Juliet Modern Scenes so that I can review them and give you feedback. If you have hand-written these scenes, take a picture and send them to me. • ATTN: Ms. Petnuch’s 11TH Graders:

Please work on your common app personal statements. I will be available by email at all times to give advice, edit, and help you work through your essays. I am fully expecting drafts, NOT PERFECTION.

    ***npetnuch@yonkerspublicschools.org

    *Before Writing:

Tell me a story. Write down anything about your life that may be of some importance.

Spend a few minutes clearing your mind. Write down whatever comes out.

Spend a few minutes (six minutes each) per prompt to get your creative juices flowing! See which one speaks to you most.

    Common App Questions: (Choose One)

    1. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
    2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
    3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
    4. Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.
    5. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
    6. Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
    7. Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

*NUMBER SEVEN IS KIND OF A TRAP. I WOULD AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS.
