A Day in the Life of the Hudson River
Student scientists from Riverside High School and Museum School 25 participated in A Day in the Life of the Hudson River Estuary, an annual event organized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
Students from than 40 schools were stationed along the southern half of the Hudson estuary system, stretching from Peebles Island at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers, to the Canarsie Pier on Jamaica Bay, collecting data to produce a "snapshot" of conditions along their respective sections.
Deploying seine nets by hand, and using measuring tools and water testing kits, the students investigated aquatic life, water chemistry, and physical conditions.
The students contributed to ongoing research by submitting their collected data to the DEC website. Their findings are incorporated into lesson plans that guide them through the dynamic changes in the river's conditions between locations and years.
In advance of the event, Riverside High School teachers engaged in hands on training of the various data collection techniques with the DEC.
On the day of the event, three classes from Riverside worked through six stations and gained a better understanding of the Hudson River from multiple perspectives. Additionally, the students had the opportunity to take on unique leadership roles.

Taramati Singh's 10th grade chemistry students guided Martha Kharouba's 9th grade living environment students through the water chemistry station. In a collaboration between Riverside and Museum 25, Kelly Jakab's P-TECH students led Candice Wood's 6th grade class through the stations and exposed them to techniques used by scientists.
