Junior Letter

Dear YMA Junior Class and Families,

Junior year is an important year for high school students.  This is the year that students really begin to solidify their college plans and take important steps towards reaching their post high school goals.  I want to take this opportunity to share some of the important steps that students must take both inside school and outside of school as we work towards senior year and college.

Academic Performance

  • Junior Year is the most current grades that college will review as part of the college application process during senior year. We also want to make sure that we pass all classes and make up through credit recovery or summer school any classes or regents that were not passed.

College Choices

  • Students were asked to identify 10 colleges that they are considering by the end of junior year through Naviance.
  • During the fall semester, college representatives will be in the cafeteria through the week to answer questions or provide more information.
  • Schedule College visits in the spring of Junior year.

Naviance

  • Naviance is a resource that all students have access to for information about colleges, careers and scholarships. Naviance is also a tool that students will use to build their “academic” portfolio with teacher recommendations, Standardized test scores and transcripts.  This is also one of the systems that students will use to apply for college.

Standardized testing – SAT and ACT exams

  • Students just took the PSAT exam on October 16th. The SAT will be administered free of charge in the fall of their senior year at school. During the spring semester 2020, students should register for a spring SAT and ACT exam.  Information about testing is posted on the YMA website and on the board outside the high school office.  Students should use their College Board logins to register for exams.
  • SAT preparation can be done free of charge through Khan Academy connected through College Board account.

Additional Information

  • Check the YMA website for more information about the college process in the student channel.

I am looking forward to a great junior year.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Ms. Campa.

Sincerely,

Don DeMatteo
