Ella Fitzgerald

Yonkers' School 18, formerly Scholastic Academy for Excellence, was recently renamed Ella Fitzgerald Academy in honor of the legendary jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald. Known as the “First Lady of Song,” this renaming celebrates Fitzgerald’s immense contributions to music and her deep connection to Yonkers, where she spent part of her early life. The school’s new name serves as an inspiration to students, reminding them of Fitzgerald’s perseverance, talent, and groundbreaking achievements in the music industry. With this change, the Yonkers community aims to instill a sense of pride and cultural appreciation in future generations while paying tribute to one of the most influential voices in jazz history.

The decision to rename the school is part of a broader effort to recognize historical figures who have made a lasting impact. Ella Fitzgerald Academy now stands as a beacon of excellence, encouraging students to pursue their dreams with dedication, much like Fitzgerald did. The school plans to integrate her legacy into educational programs, incorporating music and history lessons that highlight her achievements and the barriers she overcame. Through this tribute, Yonkers not only honors one of its most celebrated former residents but also reinforces the values of resilience, artistry, and inclusivity within its academic environment.
