Yonkers Public Schools Celebrates a century of Black History Commemorations

Community members are encouraged to attend and take part in an evening that commemorates the past and celebrates the promise of the next generation.

Yonkers Public Schools invites families, students, staff, and community members to the district-wide celebration honoring "A Century of Black History 1926-2026". The evening will highlight the talents, voices, and lived experiences that shape the District’s schools and community.

The commemoration will take place on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at Lincoln High School, located at 375 Kneeland Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704.

This event is a representation of the talents and diversity of our families, students, teachers and administrators. We are celebrating the historic contributions and achievements that inspire this generation of young people.

According to the Library of Congress, “Historian Carter G. Woodson initiated the annual observance of “Negro History Week” in February 1926. His modest idea blossomed into a monumental educational and cultural movement. In 1976, Negro History Week was extended to a month-long celebration to coincide with the nation’s bicentennial.”

Now, as the United States celebrates its semiquincentennial (250 years), this milestone year of organized Black history observances is an extraordinary opportunity to examine past, present, and the future our students will build.
