YONKERS, NY — October 1, 2026 — Mercy University is doubling down on its partnership with Yonkers Public Schools (YPS) by guaranteeing to meet a student’s full financial need, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  This means some students won’t pay a penny to attend the University.

“We believe in Yonkers,” said Mercy University President Susan L. Parish.  “We believe in the students, and we’re thrilled to be in the inaugural cohort of universities that are supporting the Yonkers Promise.”

The Yonkers Promise is a new partnership with six area colleges and universities that creates a direct pathway to admission. It streamlines the process.  Schools will reach out directly to eligible students with a letter of acceptance—no application, no fee, no essay and no hassle.

Reaffirming its commitment to Yonkers Public Schools, Mercy University is pledging to eliminate the financial burden that can be an obstacle for many families.

“We will meet full financial need,” said Vice President for Enrollment Management Adam Castro.  “If we have a student at or below the poverty line, who has a FAFSA Student Aid Index of zero to -1,500, they’re going to come to Mercy as a commuter student and not pay tuition.  They’ll be covered by scholarships and grants.  For everyone else, middle- and upper-class students, we’re going to cap the cost of attendance at the CUNY rate, which is around $7,000 per year.”

“This is huge,” exclaimed Yonkers Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Anibal Soler, Jr. The fact that if they qualify, tuition is paid for—that’s a big deal.  Thank you, President Parish and Mercy University.”

University officials made the surprise announcement at a gathering with YPS high school counselors.  Mercy University hosted the counselor contingent in order to share vital information about admissions, grant and scholarship opportunities, student support services and course offerings.  At present, more than 1,000 YPS graduates study at Mercy University.  It’s hoped the Yonkers Promise will help that number grow.
