YONKERS, NY – June 24, 2026 – Under a glorious blue sky, today Yonkers Public Schools officially rededicated Cedar Place Community School with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Principal Magdaline Delany did the honors with a giant pair of scissors and help from Mayor Mike Spano.
In March, the Board of Education voted to retire the school’s previous name, Cesar Chavez, following the revelation of alleged misconduct by the late, labor leader.
The new name restores the school’s original moniker, Cedar Place, with the addition of a new designation, a Community School.
The Yonkers Community Schools Program, Yonkers United, is an equity-driven educational strategy designed to transform neighborhood public schools into accessible hubs that integrate rigorous academics, physical and mental health care and family support services.
This initiative aims to close achievement gaps by meeting the needs of the whole child.
“Today marks an important new chapter as we proudly restore the Cedar Place name, honoring the school’s history while embracing an even stronger future for the students and families we serve,” stated Superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools Anibal Soler, Jr. “The launch of Cedar Place Community School through our Yonkers United initiative reflects our belief that schools should be the heart of their neighborhoods, providing supports and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom. We are grateful to Feeding Westchester for their partnership as we work together to ensure that every child and family has access to the resources they need to thrive.”
Board of Education President Dr. Rosalba Corrado Del Vecchio noted, “Community Schools can be a lifeline for so many people. Not only are we nourishing minds, but we are also providing food and services to support the entire family. Healthy, well-fed children stand a better chance in the classroom.”
On-site health services are provided by Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. By the fall, Feeding Westchester will operate a dedicated food pantry inside Cedar Place Community School.
