YONKERS, NY – July 15, 2026 – When a young Jamell Scott toiled on the gridiron during his days as a Yonkers Public Schools student, he quietly aspired to ascend to the top, so he could give back. He’s made it.
The Yonkers Public Schools District extends a salute and a warm welcome to Yonkers native Jamell Scott, the new Executive Director of Athletics, Physical Education, Health and Intramurals.
“Becoming the Executive Director of Athletics was not only a goal but a dream--- to come back and serve the very city and programs that helped shape and develop me into the athlete, leader, father and husband I am today,” said Scott.
Since July 2023, Mr. Scott has served as Principal at Barack Obama School for Social Justice. He is a proud alumnus of Charles E. Gorton High School, where he distinguished himself as an All-State athlete in both football and basketball.
Mr. Scott continued his collegiate football career at SUNY Cortland where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Physical Education, Teaching and Coaching. He also has a master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from The College of Saint Rose.
Superintendent of Yonkers Public Schools Anibal Soler Jr. noted, “Jamell Scott is an inspiration and a role model for Yonkers youth. He’s a hometown kid who worked hard, achieved success and returned to the city he loves. Having been both a student and a principal in Yonkers, he brings a well-rounded perspective that will guide him as Executive Director of Athletics.”
With over 15 years in education and more than a decade in school leadership, Jamell Scott has dedicated himself to promoting student success in academics and athletics. He’s been an educator, a coach and a mentor. His life’s work reflects a deep dedication to helping others reach their full potential. He’s happy to be home, in Yonkers.
