YONKERS, NY – September 14, 2026 – In a historic move, The New York State Board of Regents has removed the Regents examination requirement for high school graduation. Starting with the class of 2028, students will no longer have to pass state tests to earn a diploma.
The next phase of the NY Inspires education plan will establish a single New York State high school diploma. Students will still be able to distinguish their accomplishments through state and locally developed seals and endorsements.
Regents examinations will continue as a measure of student achievement, but will no longer be required for graduation.
Yonkers Superintendent of Schools Dr. Anibal Soler, Jr. reacted, “This is a bold step.” He added, “Yonkers is ready. The district has Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, College Credit Dual Enrollment and Career and Technical Education classes that can be used to chart academic growth. We look forward to hearing more from the state about how we can assess our students in a more equitable fashion.”
