YONKERS, NY — October 1, 2026 — As a volunteer coach, Yonkers Guardians wide receiver Omar Areche wears his heart on his sleeve. The New York Giants have taken notice. Omar has been nominated for USA Football’s Heart of a Giant Award, presented by the Hospital for Special Surgery and the New York Giants.
“Giving back and helping younger athletes has become an important part of who I am,” Omar said.
Omar made the cut in the third round of the six-week competition. High School coaches across the Tri-State area nominate players for their commitment, teamwork, will, character and dedication on and off the field. By the end of the contest, finalists will earn a $1,000 equipment grant for their high school— the grand prize winner will earn an additional $9,000 grant for their school and be honored on the field at a Giants game.
Yonkers Guardians Coach Doug Hogue nominated Omar because of his impressive accomplishments as a player, student and community volunteer. In his senior year at Yonkers High School, Omar maintains a 3.6 GPA. He’s a two-time All-League selection who contributes as a wide receiver, defensive back, kicker, long snapper and special teams player. When he’s not competing, Omar is coaching. He volunteers with the Yonkers Girls Flag Football League, sharing skills and offering motivation and encouragement.
Omar explained, “I go beyond simply teaching the game by encouraging athletes to stay disciplined, support one another and believe in themselves.”
Apparently, football is a family affair for Omar Areche. His twin sister, Myriam, is a standout player for Yonkers Girls Flag Football. She’s also been recognized for her accomplishments, having recently been nominated for the NFL’s Latino Youth Honors.
