🚑 Great things continue to happen at Barack Obama School for Social Justice!

Last week, Empress EMTs visited Mr. Cacciola’s class to support hands-on learning as students strengthened their knowledge of respiratory emergencies. Students participated in interactive practice sessions, learned how to use pulse oximeters, nasal cannulas, and oxygen tanks, and reviewed key signs and symptoms related to breathing difficulties and respiratory injuries.

Real-world learning in action!

🏈 The New York Giants Team hosted Girls and Women in Sports Day at MetLife Stadium, giving three Yonkers Girls Varsity Flag Football athletes—Maritza Fajardo (Yonkers Middle High School Senior), Sabrina Soares (Roosevelt High School Senior), and Naula Isa (Saunders High School Junior)—the opportunity to proudly represent Yonkers Public Schools alongside other Section 1 flag football players.

The day began with an inspiring panel featuring women working in leadership roles across sports-related careers and concluded with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of MetLife Stadium.

The legacy of Christa McAuliffe reminds us that teachers inspire far beyond the classroom. 🚀

Forty years ago, she was chosen by NASA as the first teacher to travel into space—symbolizing the limitless reach of education. Today, we honor her courage, her passion for learning, and her desire to “touch the future.”

Welcome back January 28

The Superintendent’s Student Leadership Advisory Council (SSLAC) recently shared their perspectives on graduation rates, school climate, and chronic absenteeism. Students also engaged in thoughtful discussions about curriculum in all core subjects and their day-to-day school experiences, including the cell phone restriction policy.

SSLAC ensures student voices are heard - speaking directly with the Superintendent about what matters most to them and the students in their buildings. Even more exciting, high school council members were invited by the Community Advancement and Recruitment Officer, Effie Phillips, from the City of Yonkers Mayor’s Office to join the city’s Youth Advisory Board. #YonkersMagic
