Yonkers Hometown Heroes
"Our goal is to enlist a cadre of equity warriors who will incite a generation of young people to re-engineer cultural norms, personal goals, and expectations as they define their own futures and envision their paths."
The Yonkers Hometown Heroes Seminar Series highlights Yonkers Public Schools graduates who are impacting the larger community in a positive way despite the challenges they may have faced growing up in a gritty, urban city as they share stories which will surely energize, motivate, and uplift!
The program showcases how past students have thrived in our city and schools as they identify the knowledge and skills- Powerful Decision-Making, Grit, Empathy, Hard Work- which are essential in the creation of a personal blueprint for success.
Hometown Heroes attended our schools, were athletes on our fields, lived in our community, and proceeded to attend selective colleges and enjoy fulfilling careers.
Hear anecdotes of how establishing and maintaining trusting, collaborative relationships with educators was an essential component to their success. The program creates opportunities for current students to interact with successful entrepreneurs, professionals, and educators- to name a few- to be inspired towards the creation and achievement of their own path as they lay the foundation to a future determined not by the zip codes' starting point but by the destination on the GPS.
Our goal is to enlist a cadre of equity warriors who will incite a generation of young people to re-engineer cultural norms, personal goals, and expectations as they define their own futures and envision their paths, as they strive to make a difference locally, nationally, or even globally! Each session focuses on the journey of one graduate of our Yonkers Public Schools as individual stories of resilience, determination and persistence are shared, and then culminates with a Q&A session when students have an opportunity to personally engage with the Hometown Hero.
