"You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you."

  • Welcome to the Social Studies page for grades 7 and 8!

I'm excited to prepare my students with the skills and knowledge needed that will prepare them for future academic life and everything beyond.

My approach to teaching history is one where the student is placed in scenarios to problem solve. Ultimately, the curriculum is designed to not only teach students the history of the country we live in, but to also train them in real world skills.

The curriculum is aligned with the New York State K-8 Social Studies Framework. Both grades focus on American History. 7th graders begin with the first people to inhabit and migrate to the Americas and end with the Civil War. 8th graders begin with Reconstruction and end with the Present Day.

As we go on this journey of America's history, students will be trained in analyzing a variety of historical sources. The goal is to have them as experts at identifying bias, historical context, point of view, historical accuracy, and structure. These skills serve at not only making the students think like historians, but also in preparing them to determine fact from fiction in this age of "Fake News."

In addition to analyzing historical sources, students will be trained in making concise arguments, using evidence to back up their claims, and putting this all together in properly structured essays. Geography is also another central component of the curriculum. Students will be able to display mastery of domestic and global spatial awareness as it relates to natural features of the environment and political boundaries between nations and continents.

I'm pleased to say that I've had many different mentors throughout my training and career. Their distilled knowledge and my own approach to the subject of history have prepared me to educate students in history as well as arm them with the tools needed to be a well-informed citizen.
