    ****WORK June 2ND****

“Right is right, even if everyone is against it, and wrong is wrong, even if everyone is for it.” ~William Penn

In light of recent events in our country. Today we’d like for the children to take the day to reflect on acts of love and kindness. We’d like for your children to take the day to reflect on all the people in the their community that work hard every day to ensure that they are loved, cared for and treated with equality and justice.

We want them to know that as educators our first mission is to love and protect every one of our students. And that our school, its community and the city of Yonkers are places where inequality and injustice will not be tolerated.

The children are more than welcome to express any of their feeling or thought in any way they’d like al be it through actions, drawings, writings, talking or just quiet reflection.

Initially, it was our intention to have a Zoom meeting today but we will be attending an important Zoom meeting for the BOE. For this reason myself and Mrs. Cogan will not be available for the first 1/2 of the morning. We will look to Zoom on Thursday instead.

I will also be at Family School the next 2 days cleaning out the classroom. If there is anything that you know you or your child are missing please let me know and I will keep an eye out for it.

Good morning parents and guardians and happy Friday. Last night you should have received a phone call from Mr. Jacobs regarding the Digneo family’s sudden and shocking loss this past weekend. As we are a very close school community we are clearly upset and heartbroken for our fearless leader. In the spirit of our school’s family community, we would like to gather today for a quick zoom meeting to speak with the children about the kindness project that we would like to create for Dr. Digneo to uplift her days.

    Butterflies *
It’s Fun Friday. So catch up on any work and let’s do something FUN!!

Monday is Memorial Day and the district is asking that the students create a Memorial Day themed project or assignments to honor the brave men and women who have sacrificed all for our country. In the theme of our classroom’s curriculum and current lessons I thought it would be fun to create memorial day posters and or cards with patriotic butterflies on them. Butterlies are symbols of transformation and rebirth. Yesterday you watched a video on Discovery Ed about Memorial Day and took notes. Use some of the information that you learned yesterday in your picture/poster/card.

For those of you who don’t know my husband is a member of the United States Marine Corps. He is also a patient at James J Peters VA Memorial Hospital in the Bronx. Once a month he visits the hospital for his appointment and has agreed to bring the posters, cards and pictures to the men and women who are patients there.

As always you can email me or post your pictures on your portfolios and I will download and print them from there. THIS IS DUE ON TUESDAY MORNING!

    Chapter 1: Guess what, Peter?
I stopped reading the chapter right before it finished. I left you with what we call a “cliffhanger”. Think of what the term cliffhanger sounds like. It sounds like someone hanging off the side of a cliff; leaving you in suspense. Peter has officially had it after hearing the news his parents tell him. Today you get to be an author. What do you think happens next? You’ll get to decide by writing the end of the chapter. Have fun and be creative. Use prior knowledge from Tales of Fourth Grade Nothing and what you know about the Hatcher family to help you draw some conclusions.

Today is Fun Friday! Your projects are due TODAY, BY 5pm. I’m creating a portfolio for your projects. You can post pictures of the completed dioramas and essays there, email OR send them privately in a message on Dojo.

I have created a Volume Competition on Sumdog that’s starts at 9:30 and ends at 5pm.

As always, use this time to catch up on any work that is incomplete or has not been done. You can also share what you’re doing to keep busy and active with your families.

    *****PARENTS*****

Today, the governor is expected to make a decision about schools for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year. If he says we are not to return until the fall, we would like to get your thoughts on what has worked for you and your family and how you envision the rest of the year going. We would love your honesty and opinions on what has not worked and what we could do moving forward to make it easier on you and the children. What has been the best way to communicate for you and your families? What lessons and assignments did you and the students find most effective? What assignments were best/shouldn’t be done again? Would you like to see more or less technology? Is there a website or program we’ve used that you really like/dislike? etc.       We acknowledge how hard this has been for you, your families that is why we want your opinions. We would love for yours and your children’s voices to be heard. This is your classroom too. Keep in mind we do have a curriculum and plans to follow so our lessons do have to reflect that. We hope that we have been helpful and understanding during these trying and uncertain times. Please know that we all love and miss your children with all of our hearts. We want to be back in school more than you can imagine. Hopefully, we will all be together soon and be able to laugh at some of the experiences we have shared. No one will ever forget the March of 2020 when we hugged, said our good byes and time stood still.
Never forget we are living through history.

    ****WORK FOR APRIL 27th****

    ELA/S.T.E.A.M.

To help you learn more about the details of the story we just finished and to find out more about your classmates favorite parts of the book Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing  you will create a diorama (a scenic representation in which sculpted figures, cut out drawings and or pictures and/or lifelike details are displayed) showing your favorite selected scene in a three dimensional representation. This also ties in nicely to the new topic in math; volume.

    DIRECTIONS:

To create the diorama project a shoe box or other small box may be used as the space for the scene to be created. You  may use a plastic or vinyl toy for your characters or mold one from clay. You can also simply draw a picture and cut it out. Materials such as magazines (for photos), silk or plastic plants, popsicle sticks, toothpicks, glue, construction paper, and other craft items may be used. In the theme of Earth day and celebrating our earth this entire month look through your recycled home items and see what you can use as objects to create your scene and diorama. WE DO NOT EXPECT ANYONE TO GO OUT TO PURCHASE ITEMS. PLEASE USE ITEMS FROM YOUR HOME. Creativity is encouraged!

    HOW TO MAKE A DIORAMA

    1. Find a box at least as big as a shoe box - a slightly larger box works even better. Cover the outside of the box with construction paper, paint, foil, wrapping paper newspaper or any other paper that you can find around your home.

    2. Decide on a scale. This is key, because a diorama becomes believable when it looks  “real." Find and/or create the main characters first so you can decide how big the rest of the scene should be.

    3. Collect your materials - drawings, toys,  figures, toothpicks to recreate the jungle gym Fudge”flew” off of.

    4. Decide on a background - you can paint or draw your own or use wallpaper or wrapping paper (or anything else you can find). Remember, though, that the background images should be consistent with the size of the character(s) you’ve chosen or made. Decorate the Walls: Most every diorama has three walls or views, a ceiling or sky and a floor, ground or base. You need to decorate these inside walls first. There are many ways to do this. You can paint them or color them with markers, crayons or paint. You can measure them, cut construction or other paper to fit on them, and glue that on. Or you can go to your computer and design something to look more realistic.

    5. Build your diorama working from the back to the front - start with the background (don't forget the sky/ceiling and ground/floor). Then place large objects such as beds, tables, shoe store. The smallest objects should go farthest forward. Use glue, tape or staple to secure the objects in place. Objects such as birds, clouds, balloons, and airplanes can be hung from the top using thread. Tape or tie the thread to the object and to the box.

    6. Attach a title to the box where it can easily be seen.

You will then write an essay about your diorama. Remember essays are at least 5 paragraphs long. The first paragraph should contain your topic sentence and main idea. The next three paragraphs must include your favorite part of the story, why it was your favorite part, and how you created the diorama. Your final paragraph should be your closing. Remember to include good details and rich vocabulary. Site details from the story and be sure to include reasons why you enjoyed the story and that particular “scene.”

If you were not able to read along with us you can pick your favorite part from any book you’ve read in the past. Please let us know if this is what you do.

This is due on Friday, May 1 by 5 pm. You can email, message me on Class Dojo or post your work on your Class Dojo portfolio.

We will be available throughout the week to help you with any questions or concerns about the project. As always if you need any materials please let me know. I will find a way to get you anything if you’re in need.  I have also posted  pictures and examples of some ideas that you can use.

As some of you know this was supposed to be our week off for Spring recess but with everything that is going on in NYS, Governor Cuomo thought it would be a better idea to keep the schools open so that children and their parents could have an ongoing community connection and place to go.
We acknowledge that these past weeks have been very emotional, scary, and overwhelming. We are still required to check in with you every day and make sure that the students are engaged in learning. That is why, as a school, we have decided to do either a project-based activity for the week or give any students who may have not handed in any of the work over the past 3 weeks an opportunity to make up the work that has not been done. However, for the most part, everyone in the class has been doing their work.

So with that said, please enjoy one of the three projects to do with your family over the course of the week. I will still be available from 9 am to 12:30 pm every day for any questions or concerns.
While this experience has proven to be too much at times let’s reflect on the opportunities it has given us to be with our loved ones. We can make this experience a fun, loving and exciting time to be with our families You will choose one of the following that will be due on 4/14.

    1) Create a time capsule to be opened 20 years from now. Include news articles, pieces of work, things you are doing, what you look like, and fun information about yourself and your family over the last three months of 2020 (I have included the worksheets for the time capsule if you choose to do this one)!

    2) Select one family member to call and interview about their life story. Try to pick a family member that is much older than you and has memories of what life was like long ago. Your grandparents are probably missing you right now and would love to spend some special time talking about their life. Write their biography using the Book Creator app on Clever. You can use these questions to help you with your family interview:
    What’s your first memory?
Who’s the oldest relative you remember? What do you remember about him or her?
    How did your parents meet?
Tell me about your childhood home.
How did your family celebrate holidays when you were a child?
How did you meet your spouse?
Tell me about your wedding day.
Tell me about the day your first child was born.
What were your favorite school subjects?
Tell me about your favorite teacher.
Tell me about some of your friends.
    Describe your first job.
What did you do with your first paycheck?
What was your favorite job and why?
Who are some of your heroes?
Where were you on September 11th, 2001?
What is your first experience like using a smartphone?

    3) Create a journal of any kind (video, art, photo, etc. and of course, it must have a written element) to document the next week of your life during social distancing. The journal must include an entry for everyday this week. This is a historical human experience. Let’s document it.

As with all assignments you can post it in the portfolio section, email/message it, or text a picture of it when it’s completed. Please do not submit any completed work before to Tuesday, April 14.

ENJOY THIS TIME WITH YOUR FAMILY
