Coronavirus Update from the Superintendent March 10, 2020
Actualización del Superintendente a la Comunidad de Las Escuelas Públicas de Yonkers sobre el Coronavirus 10 de marzo de 2020
Yesterday, the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) and Education Department (NYSED) issued updated guidelines for school districts for COVID-19 (Coronavirus). Yonkers Public Schools is following these guidelines and working with the Westchester County Health Department (WCHD) regarding any notifications of exposure. As of this letter, we do not have any confirmed cases of COVID-19.
Under the guidelines, if a school has a confirmed case of COVID-19, the school will be required to close for an initial 24-hour period, to begin an investigation in collaboration with the Westchester County Health Department to determine the contacts that person(s) may have had in the school. The investigation will determine any further closing or quarantines as recommended by the County Health Department. During that initial 24-hour period, the school will be cleaned and disinfected. NYSDOH and WCHD will determine if the school closing needs to extend more than one day.
It has come to our attention that individuals in several of our schools have been potentially exposed to people who tested positive for COVID-19. Each case has been investigated by the Westchester County Health Department and they have not recommended any school closings. If there is a confirmed case, that school community will be notified through all means available.
Anyone – student or staff member – who may have been exposed to persons with a positive COVID-19 test MUST notify the school principal. Every exposure will be investigated by the District’s medical staff and referred to the Westchester County Health Department.
If a student or staff member comes to school and is exhibiting flu-like symptoms or becomes ill during the school day, they will be isolated and sent home. The County and State Health Departments will be notified for follow up and testing.
The District will continue with enhanced cleaning in schools, bus companies will continue to clean buses, and our school administrators and nurses will continue to monitor the health and safety in our schools.
Most importantly, if your children are sick keep them home; we have suspended perfect attendance guidelines. Staff members who are ill must also stay home.
We are one community and we must all be responsible for each other’s well-being. I will continue to keep you updated as I receive additional information.

Superintendent's Phone Message
Dr. Edwin Quezada calling with several important messages. With the number of the Coronavirus increasing in New York State, it is imperative that every student, parent and staff member all work together to ensure the well-being of everyone and to try to minimize everyone’s exposure to the virus. This weekend, the custodial staff deep cleaned all of our schools. Deep cleaning is most effective when it is combined with good hygiene practices every day.
I am asking everyone to do the following:
- Do not come to school if you have flu like symptoms such as fever or coughing,
- Wash your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer many times during the day,
- Parents review with your children proper hygiene practices such as sneeze into elbow not your hands, and don’t touch you face,
- Provide your children with hand sanitizers, if available.
The CDC published a poster that will help you teach your child these best practices, look for it in my social media or on the district website.
Please remember that you are responsible for reporting to your principal any case of potential exposure to the Coronavirus. When doing so, please provide as much information as possible. Once we receive the information, our medical staff contacts the Westchester County Department of Health, they determine the next steps required by the District.
We are in this together and the safety of all students and staff is our top priority. Let us work together. Please feel free to call or email me if you have questions.
