Building Vocab and Language at Home
There are many ways to build language skills and vocabulary at home.
Make your home a language-rich environment.
Remember to read aloud to your child
Give your child the label to all things around the home especially things they really enjoy (favorite foods, toys, games)
Make time to have meaningful conversations with your child. Ask them questions about their day, about their experiences and about what they are doing (even if you know the answer!)
Celebrate communication attempts and try to respond as quickly and often as possible.
Practice social greetings as part of your daily routine (saying good morning, asking how they feel).
Talk about actions out loud while you are doing them to model this language use for your child. For example, while doing the dishes one can comment ("I am washing the dishes").
Model a variety of vocabulary and word types for your child (action words, things, places, adjectives).
Describe objects out loud as much as possible (comment on what something looks like, feels like, smells like, think of the 5 senses).
Hello PEARLS families, during school closure I am available by email and conference at dricciutislp@gmail.com between the hours of 8-9 AM, 11-1 pm and 4-5 pm.
Please contact me to receive speech and language materials for your child if you did not receive a hard copy packet.
Wishing you safety and health.
