Acclaimed poet, writer and activist Maya Angelou
Angelou wrote 'A Brave and Startling Truth' for the fiftieth anniversary of the United Nations, a worldwide organization committed to humanitarian efforts such as peace and ending world hunger. Therefore, it is fitting that Angelou would write a poem about peace to commemorate the institution.

1.5.B. Attends to students' personal and family experience.
I consider all of my students’ personal and family circumstances through the planning process on a daily basis. I have established a strong rapport with each parent and have gleaned a lot of knowledge from the parents and caregivers about the students’ learning processes and interests. I am very sensitive to the fact that my students have a variety of family experiences, including multiple generations in one household, difficult financial circumstances, limited space in the home and health challenges. Everyone is navigating a very difficult time. Any of the caregivers could vouch for my sensitivity to their specific family circumstances and learning challenges. I keep a log of all of my communications with the family. I deeply consider and plan for my students’ various developmental delays and specific learning needs.
Given the predominant classification of communication impairment, I am highly sensitive to each child’s perspective when discussing the content of the lessons explored in the classroom. I give children time to respond to all readings and videos regarding their thoughts and feelings about the subjects introduced and explored. This process has evolved from the beginning of the school year to the present. I have facilitated a warm, honest and safe classroom environment where students feel validated and empowered, developing their self-esteem.
We have grown into a more cohesive classroom group where everyone sits, pays attention and shares their perspective. For example, last Friday, we read the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme with a second reading of Little Lumpty by Miko Imai. The children shared similar feelings and identifications of the characters, situation and challenges using feeling words. One child shared a fear of heights and others commented about how Little Lumpty didn’t listen to his mother. One shared that he would love to jump on the outstretched blanket used to save Lumpty. This shows a healthy engagement of their sensitive imaginations.
