Welcome!

  • Welcome Message

    Hello, students!

This is Mr. Haughton, your Earth Science teacher for the 2023-2024 school year at Gorton High School. Welcome to Gorton High School and to my Earth Science class! I am delighted to have all of you as my students and eager to begin a brand-new school year.

I know some of you might be a bit anxious, considering everything that is happening around us and in other places: disease outbreaks, the uptick in violent crimes, natural disasters, and so on. Please understand that this is a normal human reaction to situations like these. Nevertheless, you can rest assured that myself, as well as your other teachers, are here to support you and to do everything in our power to make sure this school year is a success for you.

This year begins my 23rd year working as a teacher in the Yonkers Public Schools system, and my 28th year teaching altogether. I have been teaching at Gorton High School since September 2006. I taught Living Environment for a while and later switched to Earth Science. I love teaching Earth Science, especially since I am always so fascinated with the wonders of the natural world, including the occasional mind-blowing events that nature throws at us in different forms: earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, meteor showers, eclipses, and so on; not to mention the daily, seasonal, and annual cycles!

Many of my students in the past have developed a love for the subject and went on to study Earth and Atmospheric Sciences in college. In addition, having worked with the American Museum of Natural History for many years as a teacher mentor, I helped many teacher candidates fulfill their lifelong dream of becoming Earth Science educators; some are currently teaching in Yonkers Public Schools.

It is my hope that you, too, will develop a passion for the subject, which I believe will be the impetus needed to pursue some aspects of Earth Science later in your educational pursuit.

I look forward to meeting and working with all of you.

    Regards,

    Mr. Haughton
