Course Description:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC.gov) has identified 6 areas of health-risk behavior, largely established during childhood and adolescence, that contribute to excessive morbidity and premature mortality:
• Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence
• Sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV infection
• Alcohol and other drug use
• Tobacco use
• Unhealthy dietary behaviors
• Inadequate physical activity HealthSmart focuses on these primary epidemiological risks, as well as two more areas identified by the CDC as necessary for a comprehensive health education curriculum:
• Mental and emotional health
• Personal health and wellness
The HealthSmart Middle School program has 6 units designed to help teens establish healthy behaviors in one or more of the CDC priority areas.

Grading Information:
All Assignments will be assigned a point total based on amount of work needed to fulfill task. At the end of the quarter Total points (sum of all assignments) will be added up (ex. 850). Your points earned will also be added up (ex. 750). Points earned will then be divided by all Total points. All work is placed in your folder, which is placed in your class bin, folders never leave classroom. You start with a ZERO, and must EARN your grade!

Please note students have the opportunity to correct or improve their grades throughout the quarter. If an assignment is not completed in the allotted class time, they may take it home. It is not homework but it is their responsibility to return it in their folders by the end of the quarter.
Example:
750 (points earned) =.0.8823 =88%
850 (total points)
*average final grade will always be rounded up to the nearest whole number
Note:
Your Behavior grade for each quarter is worth 200 points!
*1 point will be taken off each time I have to stop class to correct your behavior!
Rules and Expectations:
Each class will develop their own set of expectations and rules, which will be displayed within the classroom.
*Returning this page to class will count towards your quarter grade (50 points).
