• Districtwide Testing

    • Students in the Yonkers Public Schools are tested several times during the school year. A variety of assessments are used to evaluate student developmental and academic skills in key areas. These assessments provide teachers, administrators and parents valuable information about each child’s progress in school.

      Please note that a number of local assessments in a variety of subject areas are also used to assist teachers and administrators to evaluate student progress throughout the school year.

      The following assessments are administered in the grade levels indicated.

    •  Prekindergarten

      • Brigance Assessment – an initial screening of student skills given in the fall
      • Work Sampling System - the Work Sampling System (WSS) is a performance-based assessment focusing on 7 areas: Personal and Social Development; Language and Literacy; Mathematical Thinking; Scientific Thinking; Social Studies; The Arts; Physical Development and Health. The WSS is used to set student expectations and document observations of routine activities, identifying the child’s strengths and needs.

      Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2

      • Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) – assess academic skills in reading and mathematics given in the fall, winter and spring
      • Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) – assesses early childhood developmental and academic skills given in the fall and spring
      • Evaluación del Desarrollo de la Lectura (EDL) – assesses early childhood developmental and academic skills given in the fall and spring. Administered to students in the Transitional Bilingual Education Program.
      • New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) – given only to English Language Learner (ELL) students

      Grade 3

      • Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) – assess academic skills in reading and mathematics given in the fall, winter and spring

      • New York State Next Generation Learning Standards Testing Program – Science The majority of Grade 8 students have the opportunity to take a Science Regents
      • New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) – given only to English Language Learner (ELL) students

      Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12

      • New York State Regents exams mandated to satisfy the State Education Department graduation requirements for English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science
      • New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) – given only to English Language Learner (ELL) students
