Kindergarten and first grade work corresponds with what is being covered in reading in the child's regular classroom. We cover the same lesson in Benchmark in ESL that your child is covering with their classroom teacher. After you practice the homework with your child, please sign and return. Students are working on skills related to the NYS Common Core standards for reading and writing.
Students in 5th-8th grade are working on fiction and nonfiction vocabulary that are used on the NYS ELA and NYSESLAT (ESL) tests. Students have vocabulary flashcards that they should review at home and will be tested on throughout the year. Students will have more cards sent home prior to Christmas to add to their lists. All students are working on skills related to the NYS Common Core standards for reading and writing. Students in 5th and 6th grade are covering in ESL the same lesson that is being covered with their classroom teacher. Students in 5th-8th grade have vocabulary review activities on Teams under Assignments.
Students can score out of ESL by either scoring a 3 or 4 on the NYS ELA test (passing) or commanding on the NYSESLAT. We are required to continue to see students for two years after they score out of ESL.
