Here are some fun activities you can do at home to support language skills:
Children are expected to ask and answer questions within the school environment as well as engage in discussions. This can be supported in the home during your interactions with your children.
How?
- Read a book. After each page or every few pages, ask questions about what happened. Have your child take a turn and ask you question about what happened, or what is seen on the page.
- At dinner you can do a round robin. Each member takes turns asking the person next to them the same question. Ex. what’s your favorite…? Or you can write questions that were thought up with you and your child and put them in a hat or bowl and take turns asking the questions.
- This can also be done for story telling with sentence starters and each person has to take a turn adding on to the story. For example: it was a beautiful sunny day. I was walking down the street and saw a _____. The person finishes the sentences and then everyone takes turns adding another detail to the story.
Tips for having a conversation:
-Have some questions written down your child can ask after you make a statement. Ex. You say, I went to the food store today.
They can ask: what happened next? Did you have a good time? etc
-Talk about a really interesting picture.
-Make sure everyone is listening and not asking a question that you already know the answer to.
Ex. I ate chocolate cake and it was delicious.
Q: was it delicious? (this has already been answered in the statement). The person was not listening.
Other Activities:
Memory game. You choose household items (4 or 5) then everyone closes their eyes and one person takes one item away…what’s missing?
Sequence game – tell your child to get 2 or 3 items. You can first give them in order and then make it harder by adding terms before and after.
