Procedures and Routines
jlibrandi@yonkerspublicschools.org
Attendance:
It is very important your child attends school every day and arrives on time for a successful and positive learning experience. We are busy setting rules and establishing routines which are essential for a successful day. If your child is not consistently coming to school, they will have a difficult time adjusting to our classroom and have an unsuccessful year. Your child may be receiving the wrong message that school is not important. If, for some instance, your child is sick or has a doctor's appointment and is unable to attend school, please inbox me on Class Dojo or email me, call the school or send a note in with your child explaining the reason for their absence. Children should also not be picked up early unless they have a scheduled appointment that can not be made after school hours.
Homework
Paper Pencil Tasks/Homework will be given daily (Monday-Thursday). A parent or guardian should check over all completed homework to ensure understanding. Parents should also help their child log on to Clever and have their child complete "My Path" on the iReady App for math and English Language Arts activities are assigned on the Benchmark App (phonics, interactive games, poetry, digital decodable books, Heidi's Songs)
Short Conferences and Discussions
I am unable to talk to parents at drop-off and pick-up, but if you have questions or concerns and would like to schedule a conference, please inbox me on Class Dojo, email me at jlibrandi@yonkerspublicschools.org or call the school at 376-8320. We can set up a time to meet or a phone conference that works for both of us.
Reading
Reading is a very big part of Kindergarten. Students will practice reading, writing, listening and speaking. They will be introduced to a variety of texts and will be reading many different genres throughout the school year. The time you spend reading to or being read to by your child, is a very important part of their homework each night. I will frequently ask students to share, with the class, their favorite books read at home! It should be exciting and fun!
Portfolio
Each student will have a binder. It will contain student work samples that show the application of skills across all subject areas. The students will help me to come up with rubrics for evaluating their work. The binder will be a useful tool in evaluating the students’ progress over time, and a collection of amazing work and projects that they can be truly proud of! They will be sent home the end of the school year and parents may view them during conferences.
Flash Cards
Kindergarten is an important time to practice and memorize letter names, letter sounds, sound movements, colors, shapes, sight words, numbers and basic addition and subtraction facts. I recommend getting sets of flash cards or even better, making some together at home. Practicing these skills a little bit each day will put your child on the road to success in school.
Benchmark Tests and iReady Math Tests:
Tests will be given periodically in ELA and Math using iPads (Computer Based Testing) as well as through teacher observations and paper pencil tests.
Snacks
We will have a quick snack time break every day. Children should bring in their own small snack of water in a plastic water bottle and goldfish crackers, pretzels or animal crackers. If your child has a food allergy or restrictions, please send in a special snack.
Lunch
Lunches should be in a lunch box or a bag with your child’s name on the outside. If your child is buying lunch, please tell them what they are going to order. Sometimes they forget what they are buying.
Birthdays
We will celebrate birthdays and sing to your child. Parents may send in munchkins and juice boxes to celebrate birthdays. Parties are celebrated with classmates and school staff only. Party bags are discouraged due to candy that could be a choking hazard on the bus or in cars.
Book Orders
A list of book selections will be sent home periodically. This is a great opportunity to purchase books at a great price. If you wish to place an order, please fill out the order form and return it to school before it is due. Please send cash or a check made out to the book club and put it in an envelope addressed to me.
Notes
Notes that are sent to school should be in an envelope with your child’s full name on it.
Dismissal
Please fill out the “Getting to Know You” form that lets us know how your child gets to and from school and any special needs or restrictions.
Be Organized. Be ready. Be a success!
