Mr. William Sweeney
I have been teaching at Lincoln High School for sixteen years, and in the Yonkers Public Schools for a total of twenty-two years. I worked as a teacher in the Bronx for two years prior to starting in Yonkers.
I have taught grade 12 for eight years and grade 10 for 14 years. The title of the course for Grade 12 is Elements of College Writing. This course focuses on the Step Up Program associated with Westchester Community College and has many features of a freshman English writing course for college. This is an interesting and organized step-by-step process that leads students to complete a research paper with a topic of their choice by the end of the third quarter. Books that we will read in grade 10 include Of Mice and Men and Twelve Angry Men. We will also focus on ELA Regents Prep and SAT Prep in the tenth grade.
I have been the Moderator for The Scroll school newspaper since 2013. Each year we publish two issues with the exception of this past year when we published one. See https://www.yonkerspublicschools.org/cms/lib/NY01814060/Centricity/Domain/33/14%20Lincoln%20The%20Scroll%20Spring%2022%20%20June%2017%20Final.pdf Due to Covid, we did not publish during 2020 and 2021 school years. The Homepage of the Lincoln High School website has the last three issues published, and has archived the previous years' issues. I am always interested in accepting students submissions of articles and photographs related to promoting the Lincoln High School community. Join The Scroll school newspaper Club. We meet on Thursdays from 2:40 to 3:15 in room 318. During that time we work on editing student writings and designing the layout of upcoming newspaper issues in Publisher software. Students who publish articles have a great advantage in showcasing when applying to college.
I will be working with students on a podcast this year. To start, we will be interviewing teachers to find out some areas of their interest which we otherwise would not be able to know.
One of my favorite experiences teaching has been with the twelfth graders from school year 2016-2017 when we made my first attempt at making a movie. It is called Mentoring, and was based on a true story in The Call. We had an impressive fourty-five seniors acting in the five scenes. Plus, we had a student designated as the camera person. The camera person and an actor wrote about their work on the movie in The Scroll school newspaper in the Spring of 2015. Unfortunately, the movie was never finished due to the complexity of final editing. I had worked on the editing all summer, but had to let it go as another school year was about to begin. I was disappointed in that it was never published. But, I did learn about myself that I have an interest and a good talent in directing students in videos and movies. In 2017-2018, I worked with sophomore ENL students in my classes to produce several short video commercials for the GearUp program. I learned about video by participating since 2013 in a program for teachers at the Jacob Byrnes Film Center in Pleasantville, New York.
My assignments and grades are on PowerSchool. We will also be using Schoology.
