Directions 

Respond to each prompt with a minimum 250 word response.  Each response must refer to at least one text.  You must use at least 3 of the provided texts across your three responses.   

Guidelines 

• Read through each prompt. 
• Formulate your opinion.  
• Read through the texts and choose relevant information to support each response. 
• Be sure to answer each prompt completely with effort in an academic language. 
• Be sure to respond to each prompt. 

• Be sure to use at least 3 (three) separate texts. 
• Cite your text by author’s last name in parenthesis when citing text, ex: (De La Cruz).

1. What disappointments and challenges do graduating Seniors face amid the Coronavirus pandemic?—Explain WHY these disappointments and challenges are important to examine. 

1. What difficult decisions have they had to make about their future? Specifically how has coronavirus affected college acceptances, deferments, and the Universities’ use of the wait list (is it even worth it to go to college?- remote learning etc.)  

1. What steps have been taken to help mitigate the new  normal and help these students? Do you believe that the steps taken are good ones and will be satisfying to these seniors? (Is it that important to have a formal Prom as we once knew it or traditional graduations?)

May 11-15     Chapters 1-5  The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger   

Introduction:

Main character (protagonist) and first peron narrator:

Holden Caulfield is a 17 year old boy dealing with many of the conflicts facing teenagers associated with the change to adulthood.

First person point of view:

Holden Caulfield shares his story, thoughts, feelings and memories while taking us through a few days in his life.

Holden tells the reader, "'ll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me...just before I got pretty run-down...and had to take it easy" (p. 3).

Setting:

Pencey Prep in Pennsylvania is a boarding school. A boarding school is a high school with dorms where the students live during the school year, just like a college.

Many of the students at boarding schools come from rich families, like Holden, but some students are not rich but attend the school on scholarships.

This takes place in the late 1940's but boarding schools still exist today.

Holden is from New York City and much of the story will take place in the city.

Holden will visit some iconic places you may know including Central Park and The Museum of Natural History.

The Catcher in the Rye was my favorite book when I was in high school and I am very passionate about sharing this novel with my students.

The Catcher in the Rye is a famous Modern-American literary classic.

Part 1: Read five (5) chapters each week

Part 2: Create 5 questions for each five chapter block about the most important things that happen in those chapters.

These may be developments in plot, characters, or conflict.

You are creating questions just like my 'Do Now' questions we did in class for six months so you have plenty of experience with this exercise.

You do not need to answer the questions, simply creating qualtity questions after a close reading tells me you know the answers.

Part 3: Choose at least two (2) central ideas from those five chapters and give supporting evidence of how the author develops this cental idea.

Using the play Fences as an example your assignment would look like this:

Argument Essay: The play A Raisin in the Sun explores the conflicts faced by the Younger family, but who is the main character?

State your claim as to who you think is the main character and give supporting evidence.

Discuss, acknowledge and challenge the opposing claim. Who might others choose as the main character and why? Again, use supporting evidence.

Write a conclusion which summarizes your main points and supports your thesis statement (claim).

April 29-May 1 We read the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry in class. Unfortunately, we did not have time to watch the film version of the play.

The film is from 1961 and runs just over 2 hours.

Take notes during the movie and submit, via email, a list of 3-5 Comments, Obervations, Questions, Critiques.

There is not much to contrast between the film and our reading of the play as they are almost identical.

Instead, you will comment on how the performances of the actors and the vision of the director compares with what you imagined in your mind's eye while reading the play.

I will be posting an essay assignment on Monday based on the characters in the play.

April 28-29 After reading the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" Write a literary response of 2 paragraphs summarizing the plot and conflict of the story.

This is a short story famous for its surprise ending. The surprise ending is a popular literary element used by authors in some short stories.

The author hopes to create am engaging, entertaining, thought provoking and memorable experience for the reader.

4/1/2020 Journal #3 Most colleges and universitites offer distance learning courses. Some degrees can even be earned without ever stepping foot in a classroom. There is certainly an adjustment to the sudden change to distance learning we are forced to resort to given the current circumstances. What challenges are you having adjusting to distance learning? What are some advantages and disadvantages of online distance learning as compared to the classroom? What skills would be essential for success in a distance learning course? Which method would you prefer in college? Why?

3/31/2020 Journal #2 During these diificult times, we are all expreiencing some level of anxiety about coronavirus, concern for loved ones, difficulty with the Stay at Home order and adapting to a disruption of our daily lives. Just a reminder, your parents and teachers have not experienced anything quite like this either. All that said, can you find a silver lining in this otherwise dark cloud? Write about something, anything, positive that has or may still come of this in the future, either for you as an individual or for society as a whole. Maybe you have been helping your little brothers and sisters learn to read, or spending more quality time with family, perhaps you have helped others or used this time to pick up a new hobby that you enjoy. Please share.

3/30/2020 Journal #1 We are all social beings who thrive on human interaction and during these difficult times many people may be eperiencing feelings of loneliness or isolation. How are you coping with the "social distancing" requirement of this current global conflict? How are you maintaining social contact with others? Do you have any positive tips that may be helpful to others?
