Targeting Speech and Language at Home

  • Thank you for visiting!!!

Working together we can ensure your child obtains the maximum benefit from their in person learning interactions this 2021-2022 academic year.

    Here are some basic recommendations:

    • Speech is to be targeted two to three (2 to 3 ) times per week for around thirty (30) minutes.
    • There is not a set time for when you can do any of the activities provided to you.  Don't worry about due dates.
    • Try your best to make it fun and flexible.
    • Your home is not an actual school:  Be Patient.
    • It's ok to break up the work and the session time, it's about reaching the child.
    • Allow breaks if your child needs them.
    • Do your best to make it about connecting with your child, do not place too many demands at once.
    • Make it social.
    • Model for the child so they can see and clearly understand what you are expecting.
    • Praise, Praise, Praise your child for doing well, and for attempting targets.
    • It helps if you can set a basic schedule for your at home learning pracrice times but please, above all be kind to your child in this process.

Reading is fundamental in the development of speech and language skills.

Even if your child does not have many words, reading research shows evidene on how the development of language is fostered using books.

Books help with exposure to vocabulary, grammar, language models, and visuals supports in one shared communicative context.
