Roosevelt High School - Early College Studies

    2020 - 2021 Mr. Ortega

Hello, and welcome to our class! I am looking forward to a great year where we will learn math, of course, and will learn about each other. I have prepared this guide for you to let you know what you can expect from this class. Please read it carefully and ask your parents/guardian to read it, too. Each of you can sign the bottom indicating that you have both read and understood the information. Keep it in a safe place in your notebook so that you may refer back to it when you need to. If either you or your parents have any questions or concerns now or at any time during the year, please do not hesitate to contact me. The BEST way to reach me is by the email given below, as I check it several times a day. You may also call and leave me a message at the school, and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

    I. COURSE REQUIREMENTS

Students are expected to come to class on time, prepared with their packet/binder and a pen/pencil EVERY DAY!

    II. PACKETS/BINDER/PENCILS

    • Packets containing notes and homework assignments will be distributed each unit.
    • You MUST keep these packets in your 3-ring binder or folder.  Please keep a few sheets of loose leaf paper for occasional out of packet work.
    • Each unit packet will last approximately 2-4 weeks long, students are encouraged to keep their binder/notebook organized throughout the year. If the packets do not fit in their binder, they should put them away safely in a folder where they can access them later on in the year.

    III. HOMEWORK

    • Practice makes perfect, especially in mathematics. For this reason, homework will be assigned every night. (Weekends and vacations included!).
    • Assignments and class notes will be posted daily on the board and through the Teams app.
    • It is expected that homework will be completed each day.
    • ALL WORK MUST BE SHOWN--ANSWERS ONLY ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
    • Homework will not be graded for correctness, but rather checked for effort. Good effort will be rewarded with full credit, and appropriate deductions to the homework grade will be made for a lack of effort, so the homework grade DOES NOT reflect understanding.
    • Late homework will be expected to be completed and turned in.

    IV. GRADING

    • Each quarter your grade will be calculated using the following formula:

    Quarter Grade = 30% Tests, 25% quizzes, 15% Homework, 15% Unit Packets, 10% Participation, 5% Attendance.

    • Tests will be given at the end of every unit, and always announced well in advance. Each test will count as 100 points.
    • Quizzes will be given throughout each unit, and may be announced or unannounced.
    • All tests and quizzes should be kept in your folder/notebook for use as study aids for the final exam.

    V. ABSENCES

    • If you are absent, please be sure to check the designated area in the classroom for the notes and assignments you have missed.
    •  It is YOUR responsibility to make up any work. We generally cover new topics daily, and missing even a day can get you behind. It is not expected that you master work from an absence on your own, rather that you get the notes and work that you missed and familiarize yourself with it so that you are ready to attend extra help.
    • If you miss a test, you will be expected to see me immediately upon your return to school to schedule a make-up. Normally, tests should be made up within 2 days, but more time will be allowed if there are extenuating circumstances. The important thing is that you see me about it right away!

My philosophy is very simple; if you TRY YOUR BEST, do your homework EVERY night, come to class prepared with all necessary materials, and pay attention, you will do well in this class. I know that if we all work together we can make it a GREAT year, full of learning and fun!
