• UNITED STATES HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT Regents

    OVERVIEW:

    Examines inception of US as a nation from pre-colonial era to creation of nation-state under Constitution and development of nation up to modern times. There is an emphasis on enduring issues and how Constitution and role of federal government have been adjusted to meet changing needs of people during different historical eras and examines the growth of the United States as a world power.

    Following a chronological and thematic approach, the curriculum explores such topics as Colonial America, Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Bill of Rights, various Supreme court cases, early Presidential administrations, Jacksonian Democracy, Civil War, Reconstruction, age of Big Business, Rise of Populism, growth of urban America, Progressive Era, and rise of American imperialism through creation of an overseas empire including debate over expansionism in 1890s, including Spanish American War, addition of Progressive era amendments to Constitution, World War I, Roaring Twenties, Harlem Renaissance, Great Depression, New Deal, major movements of post-World War II era, Cold War, McCarthyism, Korean and Vietnam conflicts, Civil Rights Movement, overviews of decades from 1950s through 1990s and beyond, and modern issues and United States role in current world system.

    Units of Study:

    Unit 1: Forming a Union: Colonial and Constitutional Foundations (1607 – ca. 1800)

    Unit 2: Expansion, Nationalism, and Sectionalism (1800 – 1865)

    Unit 3: Post-Civil War America Industrialization, Urbanization and the Progressive Movement (1865 – ca. 1900)

    Unit 4: Prosperity and Depression: At Home and Abroad (ca. 1890 – 1941)

    Unit 5: World War II and the Cold War (1935 – 1990)

    Unit 6: Social and Economic Change: Domestic Issues (1945 – present)

    Unit 7: The United States and Globalization (1990 – present)
