New York Education Law requires a physical examination for all newly enrolled students, students in Special Education classes and students in Prekindergarten, kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th grades. The examination may be conducted by a school or private physician.
Physical examinations for fall sports are done during May and June. A health status update is conducted in August. Exact dates are available from Health Services at (914) 376-8226. No student may participate in practice and/or interscholastic games without the approval of a School Medical Officer. School sports exams must be conducted by a by a New York State licensed physician or a nurse practitioner.
Each Yonkers public school student receives an annual vision test. Hearing is tested annually through seventh grade and again in tenth grade. Scoliosis screening is done annually for students in grades 5 through 9.
Problems revealed by a school health examination are reported to parents for follow-up by a physician or dentist, and adjustments may be made in the school program.
