Superintendent Aníbal Soler, Jr.’s Message to Families Regarding Rights of Immigrant Students
-
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As a proud Latino, I deeply understand the concerns of our immigrant families and recognize that recent events may have caused anxiety and uncertainty. I sincerely hope this message, along with the guidance provided attached, will offer reassurance and clarity.
In my short time in Yonkers, I quickly realized that our greatest strength lies in our diversity. In times of uncertainty, we stand together as a united community to support and uplift one another.
Yonkers Public Schools (YPS), the third-largest school district in New York State, is proud to serve one of the most diverse and dynamic communities in the state. As a large urban school district, we embrace and celebrate our multiculturalism, the rich cultural heritage of our students and families, and the collective strength that our diversity brings to our schools.
YPS remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all students and families.
Our schools are places of learning where every child is valued, respected, and protected, regardless of their immigration status, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, familial status, religion, or ability.
Our vision, Mission, and Core Values guide us, affirming our dedication to ensuring that all learners are equitably prepared to lead, inspire, and succeed. As part of this commitment, we stand by the New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) guidance regarding the rights of immigrant students in our schools. This guidance, shared with all principals, reinforces the legal protections in place to ensure that every student has access to a safe and uninterrupted education.
Key Points from NYSED Guidance on Immigration Enforcement and Schools:
- Immigration enforcement officials (ICE) are not permitted on school grounds unless they present a valid judicial warrant. Any request from immigration officials will be directed to the Yonkers Public School District’s Office of Corporation Counsel.
- School personnel are prohibited from sharing information about a student’s immigration status unless required by law.
- All students have the right to a public education regardless of their immigration status. Schools will not inquire about or document a student’s immigration status.
- Parents and guardians should ensure their child’s emergency contact information is up-to-date and that their child knows who to contact in case of an emergency at home.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s school. Yonkers Public Schools will continue to provide guidance to our school community, ensuring that staff are informed and empowered to protect the rights of all students.
Thank you for being part of a community that upholds dignity, equity, and excellence for all.
In service and support,
Aníbal Soler, Jr.
Superintendent
