Women’s History Month
Fanny Mendelssohn (1805–1847) was a talented composer and pianist whose contributions to music were often overshadowed by her brother Felix Mendelssohn. Despite societal restrictions on women composers, Fanny created over 460 works, including chamber music, lieder, and piano pieces. Her compositions were known for their melodic beauty and emotional depth. Fanny was an accomplished performer, hosting private concerts that featured her works. Her role in promoting music within her family and circle of musicians was significant, and she is now recognized for her pioneering role in challenging gender norms in the classical music world, inspiring future generations of women composers.
